Following a solid race at the Tour de Moore, where the team scored two riders in the top 10, the KANE Bikes/nccycling.com cycling team was eager to come out swinging and claim the top step of the podium.
Prior to the race, the team huddled together to discuss the team tactics for the event: ride hard, attack hard and speak with your legs.
From the drop of the green flag the KANE Bikes/nccycling.com team had one or more riders launched off the front. Meadowmont is a unique course in that it has a “stair step” climb, fast turns and usually produces a headwind downhill section. Using these elements each team member put in their part to bust up the race until a desired group/breakaway was safely off the front.
Nearing the 25-30 minute mark of the 60 minute race KANE Bikes/nccycling.com had Nathan in a 2 man breakaway that had a sizeable gap. Coming up to Nathan’s group was a 3 man chase group that contained Jon. Within the blink of an eye the two groups came together and with Nathan driving the break the group was safely away.
Back in the Peloton—
KANE Bikes/nccycling.com team members neutralized all counter attacks that looked dangerous and kept looking for opportunities to bridge up to the breakaway.
Up in the Breakaway—
Nathan’s self sacrificing efforts would take its toll on him and he along with a Hincapie rider would fall back to the field leaving Jon with two other breakaway companions. With around two laps to go Jon attacked his two breakaway mates and rode solo to the victory.
As the group came to the finish the guys were tired but we able to combine efforts to get Owen up to 13th place. Two guys in the Top 20!
After the race Jon had this to say: “As hard as the team was working today I had to win. I did not feel all that great today but with team work like that you just gut it out. I am really proud of the guys! We had the Kenda Tires working well with the Jack Kane rig and they were really hooking up in the turns today and these Williams Wheels are super light to help me on that hill.”
NC Cycling-Kane Bikes management wants to thank the unspoken heroes of the day:
• Andrew Olson
• Jay Charles
• Colin Barry
• Jacob Fetty
• Joey Coddington
• Hugh Moran
• Nathan Griffith
• Owen Neilson
These racers laid it all on the line today to make sure the team won. GREAT TEAM EFFORT!
